Yellow Cap Mushroom

The Yellow Field Cap Mushroom is a small, bright yellow mushroom commonly found in grassy or manured areas. When young, its cap is sticky, smooth, and slightly slimy—eventually fading from a vibrant yellow to pale gray or whitish as it ages. It’s also one of the shortest-lived mushrooms in nature, making its rare appearances all the more magical.

A gentle reminder: unless you’re a true expert, never pick or eat wild mushrooms. As the saying goes, “There are no old, bold mushroom pickers.”

My Mushroom Story:
We stumbled upon this tiny, sweet mushroom tucked into a stump surrounded by greenery. It was no bigger than the tip of my pinky finger. I wasn’t sure the photo I snapped would be clear enough to use, but something about this “cutie-pa-tootie” stuck with me. Though I usually paint flowers, this little guy just begged to be brought to life on paper.
