Fun Bearded Iris Facts:

The Iris symbolizes hope, wisdom, trust, and valor, making it a meaningful flower to have in your home. Historically, it has been associated with nobility and royalty in France and Italy.

Iris symbolism varies by color: yellow for passion, purple for royalty and wisdom, blue for faith and hope, and white for purity.

Medicinally, iris has been used as a liver stimulant, cough syrup ingredient, and digestive aid. Fresh iris root juice was applied topically to treat freckles, eczema, and acne. Iris oil is also valued in aromatherapy for congestion relief and mood enhancement.

Irises typically bloom for just a few weeks each year, but warmer climates may coax an additional bloom or two.

The iris’s fragrance is one of my favorites, ranging from notes of orange blossom and grape soda to even chocolate—truly one of a kind.

Growing up in an old farmhouse surrounded by a beautiful iris garden, I still vividly remember the intoxicating scents and rainbow of colors from my childhood bedroom window above. I fondly recall bringing freshly cut irises to my elementary teacher as a gift—never realizing then the delicate value of those blooms, only knowing they brought joy. Today, I delight in discovering irises along my walks, admiring their colors, varieties, and placements. When I find one bordering a sidewalk, I can’t resist leaning in for a deep breath—there truly is nothing like it!
